Sheriff warns of police telemarketers
OREGON, Jun 30, 2009 (Daily Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Ogle County Sheriff Greg Beitel is warning prospective donors to beware of a telemarketing group claiming to represent police officers statewide.
The Illinois Council of Police is a union organization that represents a group of bargaining units in northern Illinois, mainly in Cook County and the suburban collar counties, Beitel said in a written statement.
Beitel said the donations are sent to a rented post office box, usually at a Mailboxes, Etc., then picked up once a week and mailed to their offices in Lombard, or to their paid telemarketer, Beitel said.
Beitel said the group does not represent any sheriff in the state, nor are they associated with the Illinois Sheriffs' Association.
He issued the following tips on handling telemarketers:
- Never give out your credit card or checking account information over the phone unless you know the organization is reputable.
- Insist on written information about the organization before donating.
- Do not agree to send cash by mail.
- Resist high-pressure tactics and organizations wanting to pick up a check or cash.
Complaints about telemarketing fraud can be made to the National Consumer League hot line at 800-243-0607. If someone claims to represent the Illinois Sheriffs' Association, report them to the local sheriff or call the association at 217-753-2372.
