VoIP, IP-PBXs to Benefit as SIP Forum Approves Sonus Networks' Switch

Bolstering its offerings in an increasingly popular, cost-saving technology, a Westford, Massachusetts-based company today announced that a key business trunking solution achieved compliance with the latest standard from an IP communications industry association.

Officials at Sonus Networks say the SIP Forum has designed their so-called “Network Border Switch” as “SIPconnect 1.0” compliant.

Generally speaking, SIP trunking is a service offered by Internet telephony service providers so that businesses can adopt VoIP using their Internet connection. That way, they can communicate with others who rely on the PSTN, since the enterprise IP-PBX (News - Alert) is connected to the service provider’s PSTN gateways over the Internet.

The Sonus Network Border Switch resides in a media gateway platform, enabling centralized routing, media transcoding and security. Officials at Sonus say the switch allows service providers to more cost-effectively deploy all IP-based connections to enterprise IP-PBXs.

According to Shailin Sehgal, vice president marketing and product management at Sonus, the switch has proven its value in the market, supporting thousands of IP business trunks.

“The recognition of compliance with SIPconnect further demonstrates that Sonus is delivering an enhanced, standards-based solution for access border security,” Sehgal said. “Sonus can offer service providers a path to transform their networks to all IP, from the core to the edge.”

Specifically, SIP Forum (News - Alert) officials say, the “SIPconnect Technical Recommendation v.1.0,” or SIPconnect 1.0 – ratified just last month –is a standards-based approach to direct IP peering between SIP-enabled IP-PBXs and VoIP service provider networks, and specifies a reference architecture, required protocols and features, and implementation rules necessary for seamless interconnection between IP-PBXs and VoIP service providers.

Industry insiders say that SIP trunking is emerging as a market phenomenon.

During an interview at this month’s Internet Telephony Conference & Expo, the chief executive officer of Stockholm-based Ingate Systems – a company that develops firewall technology and products that enable SIP communications for the enterprise while maintaining control and security at the network edge – told TMCnet that the technology is becoming standard, not just for ITSP’s but also for incumbents and large cable companies.

“All service providers are moving into SIP trunking full-speed,” Eriksson told TMCnet. “Not only the ITSPs but also the big incumbents and cable companies. They’re sending representatives here (to ITEXPO (News - Alert)) to see what’s going on in the market.”

Sonus Networks’ switch is an example of the technology’s growth.

According to Marc Robins (News - Alert), managing director of the SIP Forum, the dramatic growth in communication choices provides enterprises with new options to enhance their workforce’s productivity.

“Interoperability is the single biggest hurdle to widespread adoption of new IP communications products and services,” Robins said. “The SIP Forum established the SIPconnect framework to make it easier for enterprises to bridge IP from the service providers’ core to the end users desktop, enhancing quality and enabling new service creation.”
