Communications Association Releases New Interoperability Guidelines

The Communications Platforms Trade Association, which represents communications platform and building block providers, reportedly has released its “Interoperability Compliance Document 3.0 and the Test Procedure Manual 3.0.”

Documents within include outlines for industry-standard interoperability criteria and other testing procedures for AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) building blocks. These new versions are mapped to the PICMG 3.0 Revision 3.0 ATCA Base Specification directly.

“The growing number of Network Equipment Providers turning to the ATCA form factor demand that building blocks from multiple suppliers are interoperable,” said Nirlay Kundu, CP-TA compliance chairman.

“The TPM and ICD documents are being used today by many commercial-off-the-shelf ATCA building block suppliers to ensure their products are interoperable across the industry. These documents, along with accompanying test tools, are proven to significantly reduce integration time and provide a cost and time-to-market advantage,” Kundu said.

CP-TA conducted a demonstration using the TPM and ICD documents and corresponding test tools for integrating building blocks for an IPTV (News - Alert) system. This took less time than what it takes to integrate non-tested building blocks for the same system configuration.

Chris Wardale, chair of the SCOPE Alliance (News - Alert), an association of leading Network Equipment Providers explained that Interoperable COTS building blocks for open standards like ATCA are very important for the Carrier Grade Based Platform.

The new enhancements include simplification of the documents for structuring test procedures on a one-to-one basis with the structure of the PICMG (News - Alert) 3.0 Revision 3.0 specification. The mandatory test cases which help system integrators identify what has to be done for passing an integration project for interoperability have been clarified. All the test procedures have been described in detail and mapped with the requirement numbers in the PICMG specification.

The Communications Platforms Trade Association (News - Alert) is a global organization of communications platform and building block providers which strives to accelerate the adoption of SIG-governed, open specification based communication platforms by the certification of interoperable building blocks.
