The partnership between the two companies aims at delivering higher bandwidth applications and services over optical networks.
Sorrento officials said that the company’s metro optical access solutions are helping Azzurri clients such as Neos Networks, part of the Scottish and Southern Energy Group, to increase the capacity of their existing fiber networks.
Azzurri offers a Virtual Network Operator (VNO) model that provides carrier-independent connectivity to deliver high bandwidth capacity over metro networks.
“New technologies from Web 2.0 to mobile broadband are putting further pressure on network infrastructures,” said David Macfarlane, CTO of Azzurri, in a statement.
Macfarlane said that as most carriers and enterprises don’t want to invest in traditional telco assets, Sorrento’s advanced Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology enables them to add capacity and flexibility to existing optical networks.
He said that he sees a major opportunity in delivering turnkey solutions or VNO services to meet this growing demand for bandwidth.
Officials said that the company’s range of GigaMux and GigaEdge D/CWDM multiplexers provide bandwidth efficient end-to-end solutions for service providers wanting to seamlessly overlay existing legacy services with multiple broadband data services of various types.
While talking about the latest addition to the Sorrento range, company officials said that it is a 10 Gigabit Optical Ethernet Transport (OET) line card that enables users to rapidly add multiple Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) circuits to existing networks. This reduces costs, increases GigE interfaces by up to five times and improves efficiencies for all Ethernet transport applications.
“As traffic grows and metropolitan networks become more complex, we are seeing unprecedented demand for WDM to rapidly add greater bandwidth capacity and scalability without investing in costly new fiber,” said Jim Nevelle, CEO of Sorrento Networks.
Nevelle said that Azzurri is ideally positioned with the right experience, skills and services to integrate the products and support the next generation of high-speed voice, data and IPTV (
