Digium, a provider of VoIP-capable PBX phone systems for small- to medium-sized businesses, has reached a deal with a provider of business telephone systems to represent its Switchvox (
News -
Alert) IP-PBX services.
The company has partnered with
Teledynamic Communications, Inc. to give San Francisco area businesses access to robust IP-PBX services at a value-based price. The partnership reflects the
growing popularity of open source software by small- and medium-sized businesses.
A recent report from
Eastern Management Group found that open source PBX services comprise of 18 percent of the overall PBX market share, surpassing major PBX manufacturers, including
Cisco and
Avaya.
"Businesses are looking to squeeze more out of smaller IT budgets while still driving to improve productivity through smart uses of technology,” said Randy Kremlacek, president of Teledynamic Communications, in a statement. “The Switchvox provides unified communications, Google (

Alert) and sales force integration, affordable conferencing and much more for up to 50 percent less than the proprietary manufacturers. Businesses just aren't willing to pay a premium in this new world we live in."
Teledynamic Communications, which serves the greater San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, Calif. area, provides consultation, PBX installation, maintenance, remote monitoring and support plans. The company specializes in call centers, audio and video conferencing, unified communications, hosted PBX and VOIP trunking.

Alert) is the creator of Asterisk, the open source voice communications software, which is used by more than 3.5 million servers worldwide.
Switchvox is the most widely used open source PBX, and retains 85 percent of the market share, followed by Aastra and Fonality (

Alert).
In related news, Digium announced the availability of
Skype for Asterisk open beta. The software
Skype functionality into Digium’s Asterisk software, which lets customers make, receive and transfer Skype calls from their Asterisk phone systems. The software, which is available for free through Aug. 7, lets users access the Skype network, which offers low cost PSTN access and free calling to more than 440 million Skype users.
Digium also made headlines when it reported that Switchvox SMB 4.0, the most recent version of the Asterisk-based IP-PBX,
received the “Best of Show Award” at TMC’s INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference and EXPO East 2009 in the “Most Innovative Product” category. The
Switchvox SMB 4.0 includes the new
Switchvox Extend API, which allows developers to integrate Switchvox with their business applications using an XML API, IVR management tools and event notifications.
