Verizon Biz Takes BEST VoIP to Europe, Taps ADTRAN

The Verizon (News - Alert) Business Burstable Enterprise Shared Trunks feature is now available in Europe, the company announced at the Broadband World Forum Europe 2009 event this week in Paris. The company today also disclosed that it has certified the ADTRAN NetVanta 6310 IP Business Gateway (News - Alert) for deployment with the Verizon IP Integrated Access solution in Europe and the United States.

The BEST feature enables enterprises to do load balancing of traffic across multiple sites so they can use idle trunk or communication line capacity in one location to support an increase in traffic elsewhere. This capability is available with Verizon Hosted IP Centrex, a cloud-based VoIP service; Verizon Integrated Access, a VoIP option for businesses that wish to keep their existing key telephone systems or PBXs; and Verizon IP Trunking, which provides IP-PBX (News - Alert) gear with direct SIP-based connections.

According to Verizon, the BEST feature is made even more powerful when it is coupled with Verizon Business’ (News - Alert) centralized multisite, multi-country IP Trunking option. The company explains that pairing these two offerings provides businesses with the flexibility to implement a centralized IP-PBX hub in one European location and to extend VoIP services – including the enhanced features and benefits of unified communications and collaboration – to other sites across multiple European countries.

The BEST offering is available immediately in 10 European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom as well as in the United States. It will be expanded to the Asia-Pacific region late next year.

As for the ADTRAN (News - Alert) news, this represents the first certification of a solution from this vendor for Verizon in the European market, although Verizon Business has previously certified ADTRAN Total Access 900 and NetVanta solutions for services in the U.S. ADTRAN’s NetVanta 6310, which was designed specifically for the small- to medium-sized business and enterprise markets, is a modular IP business gateway that combines the functionality of a business-class, multiservice router with a VoIP gateway.

According to Dennis Gatens, director of strategy for the enterprise division for ADTRAN, the company’s products are high performance and feature rich and do not require software licenses, which allows Verizon Business to evolve services for its customers as their needs change. Gatens adds because there are also no charges for firmware upgrades for the life of the ADTRAN product and because of its built-in diagnostic capabilities, maintenance costs for the gear are low.
